The Miami Police Department or MPD, often referred to as the City of Miami Police, is the chief police department of Miami. MPD's jurisdiction is limited to within the actual city limits of Miami, but the Department has mutual aid agreements with neighboring police departments. MPD police are distinguishable from their Miami-Dade counterparts by their blue uniforms and blue-and-white patrol vehicles.
Current Dysfunction[]
Due to the City of Miami experiencing three straight years of budget shortfalls, police officer salaries and overall public safety budgeting has been slashed, which has had a dramatic effect on attrition rates within the department itself, resulting in the dramatic reduction in the number of promotions, lower morale and a rise in crime rates.
The Miami Police Department also suffers from having outdated and dysfunctional equipment, as well what has been criticized as insufficient training.
Despite the best efforts of the MPD's Internal Affairs, police corruption is a recurring problem for the Miami Police Department.
